Damaged lithium-ion batteries are dangerous and can explode in extreme cases. This is due to the reactivity of the alkali metal lithium. In combination with water, the lithium reacts with lithium hydroxide, a highly flammable hydrogen gas. Cell short circuit, overcharging and deep discharge can lead to battery burn. For this reason, the loading and unloading must be electronically controlled by special sensors.
Since almost all batteries contain environmentally harmful substances, the Federal Environmental Agency explained e-bike batteries to industrial batteries according to §8 BattG. They are disposed of by returning the worn cells to the manufacturer or to municipal collection points.
